Academic Formation & Missionary Studies

Academic Formation & Missionary Studies

The Fides et Ratio Institute, situated at the Abbey of Fossanova, offers an integrated academic and missionary formation program rooted in the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

The Institute combines intellectual rigor with pastoral and missionary purpose, offering programs in Philosophy and Theology that are modeled on the pontifical universities and faithful to the Church’s magisterium.

Our mission is to prepare students from every continent to serve the Church and society as teachers, missionaries, and scholars who bring the light of truth into the world’s cultures.

Departments

Theology

The Department of Theology provides a formation equivalent to the Baccalaureate in Theology, encompassing dogmatic, moral, and biblical theology.
Students explore the mystery of the Incarnation, the sacraments, and the life of grace, preparing to teach, preach, and form Christian communities worldwide.
Professors of both departments devote themselves exclusively to study, research, and publication, ensuring that teaching remains faithful, profound, and alive.

Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy offers a complete course of study equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree, emphasizing metaphysics, logic, ethics, and the synthesis of faith and reason.
Following the Ordo Studiorum of pontifical universities, students engage deeply with the writings of the Angelic Doctor and his sources, learning to articulate timeless truths in dialogue with contemporary thought.

The Missionary Dimension

The academic formation offered at the Institute is inextricably linked to its missionary identity.

Inspired by the teaching of Saint John Paul II in Redemptoris Missio (53-54), the Institute fosters the inculturation of the Gospel—the encounter between faith and culture that transforms both.

“Through inculturation the Church makes the Gospel incarnate in different cultures and introduces peoples into her own community… The Church becomes a more intelligible sign of what she is, and a more effective instrument of mission.” — Redemptoris Missio, 54

Missionaries formed at Fossanova learn not only philosophy and theology but also how to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, appreciate their values, and renew them from within through the light of the Gospel.

The Thomistic Pathway

The academic heart of the Institute is the Thomistic Pathway.
Following the encyclical Fides et Ratio, which praised Saint Thomas for uniting faith and reason, the Institute seeks to study his works through the lens of modern scholarship—particularly the insights of Fr. Cornelio Fabro, whose research restored the metaphysical depth of Aquinas.

This approach transcends formal scholasticism, engaging with modern philosophical challenges and providing sound responses to contemporary atheism, relativism, and immanentism.
Our programs collaborate closely with other Catholic institutions of higher learning to foster dialogue among science, culture, and theology.

Academic Collaboration and Pontifical Partnership

The Fides et Ratio Institute collaborates academically with the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum (APRA) in Rome, sharing a commitment to the pursuit of truth through the harmony of faith and reason.

Through this partnership, students benefit from the academic structure and canonical recognition of a Pontifical University, ensuring that their studies meet the highest ecclesiastical standards of philosophy and theology.

This collaboration supports the Institute’s mission to form scholars and missionaries who are both deeply rooted in Thomistic thought and capable of engaging the intellectual challenges of the modern world.

Joint initiatives include faculty exchanges, participation in academic symposia, and advanced research and publication opportunities.

Curriculum and Admission

Academic Model:

The Ordo Studiorum follows the structure of pontifical universities and maintains a distinct Thomistic identity.

Admission Requirements:

  • Completion of a prior Baccalaureate in Philosophy (three-year institutional level).
  • Entrance Exam (De Universa Philosophia); preparatory guidance provided by a professor.
  • Latin Proficiency Exam (or participation in a one-month intensive Latin course).
  • Completion of a Baccalaureate in Theology (or equivalent: Biennium of Philosophy + Triennium of Theology).
  • Entrance Exam for Theology; preparatory assistance available.
  • Latin and Greek Exams (or participation in an intensive language course).

Students who do not meet these requirements may undertake a preparatory term before being officially admitted.

Knowledge of Latin—and ideally Greek—is essential for studying the original texts of Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Church Fathers.

Advanced Degrees

Students who complete the Baccalaureate-level curriculum may continue toward the Licentiate, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in collaboration with Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum and other pontifical universities.

These programs allow graduates to pursue deeper research and teaching qualifications recognized by the Holy See.

Graduates & Achivements

Since its founding, graduates of the Fides et Ratio Institute have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and missionary service.
Many now teach in seminaries, schools, and formation houses across several continents.

Several alumni have been honored for outstanding research in Thomistic philosophy and theology, receiving recognition from pontifical universities and diocesan institutions, including Silver and Bronze Medals for academic merit and intellectual contribution.

Their success reflects the Institute’s mission: to form leaders capable of uniting contemplation and action, study and evangelization, in the service of truth.
